HCECF's next session of science classes geared to the Elementary A2 Science Olympiad Competition to be held Saturday, 5/17/08 from 8 am – 4 pm. You must be a member of HCECF to take our science classes.
A2 division is 3rd - 5th grade - approximate ages would be 8-11
years old. If you have an interested child who does NOT fall with in
that age range above on the day of the competition and would like to compete, but is close to it, talk to denny.
Any age can take this class, but we are restricted on the ages that can compete in this competition.
Meeting Wednesdays at Magnolia Park in Apopka.
Class is held 11:00 am – 12:30 pm
*There is also Art at 10:00 am, Lunch at 12:30 pm, PE at 1:00 pm and
a variable class at 2:00 pm, all also on Wednesdays, so folks can
make a day of it if they chose.
Class dates are 3/12, 3/19, 3/26, 4/2, 4/9, 4/16, 4/23, 4/30, 5/7, 5/14 with the tourrnament on 5/17.
Cost for the session is $50 per kid – this works out to $5 per class. This includes the two engineering workshops held at the Star Wars Faire on 4/30. If your kid participated in the previous SECME science class we are offering a $10 discount on this class.
A sapphire/teal color HCECF shirt is required for all participants
and coaches. It is strongly encouraged for parents. This is our
standard HCECF shirt (the non-lego, non-pe one). These shirts will
be available for purchase, if you don't already have one. Remember,
the new cost of these is $15 because printing costs increased back
in September '07.
PLEASE also donate any of the items on the supply list that you have lying around at home.
Class is NON-REFUNDABLE because materials are pre-paired in advance.
Homework is given, and your kid will get the most educational
benefit from this class if they do the homework assignments.
Homework will be assigned at two different levels – grammar stage
(1st – 4th) and logic stage (5th – 8th), you decide which is most
appropriate for your kid.
Class size is LIMITED. Please register your intent to attend with your
FIRM COMMITMENT on that link no later than 2/21 and make payment
arrangements by 3/5. PLEASE pay sooner rather than later, since I
don't want to personally front the cost of everyones supplies! As always, science class supplies will include your notebook, class handouts, nature journal and pencils.
***Science Olympiad - elementary events (teams of up to 16 kids) – classes will be based off the challenges for this year which are:
egg drop (2 kids per team) - pretty much the standard rules; high
score = non-breaking, closet to the target, lightest
barge building (2 kids per team) - timed construction using simple
materials and kid loaded with pennies until failure also on a time
limit
mystery powder (2 kids per team) - identify 3 mixtures of 1 to 3
white powders - we know the possible powders and test procedures
permitted can bring a data chart to use at competition
grab a gram (2 kids per team) - this is trying to estimate a
specific mass of different materials
estimania (earth space) (2 kids per team) - non standard unit
estimations
penthalon (5 kids per team) - co-ed relay race with movement skills
and answering science questions
chopper challenge (2 kids per team) - kids who have done various
engineering workshops with hcecf will recognise this one as bunny
copters aiming for slowest descent with the catch that you have to
create three with different directions of rotation
picture this (biology) (3 kids per team) - pictionary with science
words

Due to the unknown nature of how the events are scheduled at this, I'm not sure how many events per kid you can compete in. We'll give every kid the oppurtunity to compete in as many events as is practical within the rules and limitations of the contest. Every kid will do every event in class. Competition event placement will be decided by the teachers and is primarily a function of when your payment was recieved and attendance.
Please list kids who will be participating in the Science Olympiad Science Class series only. Siblings not taking the class will be listed farther down. *Interested in participating on the Science Olympiad Team?
