HCECF's Literature Program

HCECF has literature-based activities for all ages.

The grades and ages above are guidelines for the average level of each program, not a strict rule. You know what your kids will enjoy the most. Many kids participate in two different ones. Each program meets once a month. Check our public calendar for the general location and day.

Check out HCECF's Scholastic Class Homepage for additional resources.

By ordering your books through the HCECF Scholastic Book Club fliers or online, you can help HCECF earn FREE books that can be used as raffle prizes to raise funds for one of our events. Don't forget about the Homeschoolers Homepage on Scholastic.com

Grammar Stage Book Club

HCECF's Grammar Stage Book Club is a popular activity for younger kids. Books are read at home, allowing even hesitant and pre-readers to participate. During this book club, we discuss the book and enhance the book with activities related to the subject matter. Often, a short book on a related subject will be enjoyed at this coop.

HCECF's Grammar Stage Book Club is currently reading the popular Magic Tree House series. The reading list is here.

Logic Stage Book Club

HCECF's Logic Staged Book Club is geared for kids ages ten to thirteen, working around a fifth to eighth grade level. Enjoy monthly book discussions on many classic 'Great Books'. Many of this years upcoming books have a tie-in to one of our numerous fieldtrips to see a live adaptation of the story.

HCECF's Logic Stage Book Club focuses on classic selections from a recognised "Great Books" list. This years reading list is here.

Rhetoric Stage Book Club

Rhetoric Stage Book Club geared for 9th - 12th grade, ages 14 - 18. Now forming.

Activities can cover any number of subjects including:

  • Social Studies
  • Language Arts
  • Art
  • Applied Math
  • Science

Literature-based fieldtrips

Many of our performing arts fieldtrips for the year are great supplements to a literature program. Watch for the sapphire HCECF shirts at the following performances:

  • Seussical the Musical
  • Oz
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
  • Emperor's New Clothes
  • Treasure Island
  • The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Creative Storytelling and Writing Class

HCECF's short summer literature program for 2008 will be a three-class series on creative storytelling and writing. This class is targeted at families with kids between the ages of six and nine years old. Children do not need to be reading fluently for this program as the majority of the classroom activities will be done orally.

Parts of a story, brainstorming, character development, and bringing all the elements together will be covered in this short creative storytelling and writing series. Lots of fun with round robin stories that help build critical thinking and listening skills, in addition to promoting and reinforcing the kids natural creativity.
