JrFLL

Junior FIRST LEGO League
JrFLL introduces the youngest students to the exciting world's of science and technology

Just like FLL, this program features a real-world challenge, to be solved by research, critical thinking and imagination. Guided by adult coaches, students work with LEGO elements and moving parts to create solutions and present them for review at HCECF's JrFLL Smart Moves Expo on May 24, 2010.

JrFLL is geared to children aged 6 to 9 years old and utilizes a modified framework of FIRST LEGO® League. Younger children are permitted to participate also. Teams of up to 6 children and an adult mentor receive a mini challenge, which is based on the FLL annual research project. They will design a model depicting an aspect of this year's "Smart Moves" Challenge. Children will spend approximately a month (20-ish classroom hours)  exploring, investigating, designing, and building a model made with LEGO bricks on a 15" x 15" base plate. In conjunction, teams create a "Show Me" poster that depicts the teams' experience during this process, through drawings and words.

HCECF students get to:

Design and build challenge solutions using LEGO elements
Apply real-world math and science concepts
Research challenges facing today's scientists
Learn team-building and presentation skills
Develop Show-Me posters
Be recognized for their growth and accomplishments

Learn FLL Values:
  • Respect each other in the best spirit of teamwork
  • Behave with courtesy and compassion for others at all times
  • Honor the spirit of friendly competition
  • Act with integrity
  • Demonstrate gracious professionalism
  • Encourage others to adopt these values

REGISTER FOR JrFLL Teams with HCECF

Costs are non-refundable.

Student Registration - $35.00
Team size is 2 to 6 kids. HCECF will run as many JrFLL teams as needed for it's members. The current JrFLL Smart Moves season ends in June. *Note - the student registration cost may go down, depending on how many kids sign-up.

BRICKschoolers team shirts (15 bucks each - obviously if you have one from a previous year or can beg, borrow or steal one you don't need another) and an Edventures membership (10 bucks on the group class subscription or about 80 bucks on your own) are required for all of HCECF's lego programs. Required homework is assigned through this.

HCECF's JrFLL teams use the "Simple and Motorized Mechanisms" sets which do NOT involve programming. Strong reading skills are not required.

If we end up with teams at the older end of the age range, I may switch them to the WeDo construction sets which involve programming.

JrFLL meets Mondays 1-4 pm in Apopka from April 12th - May 24th 2010
